Why Rounding is Done

Rounding is a mathematical technique used to simplify numbers, making them easier to work with. This method helps in estimating values and is useful in various everyday situations, such as when dealing with currency, measurements, or statistics. For example, rounding can help determine the total cost of items or the average score of students without dealing with complex decimal values.

How Rounding is Done

To round a number effectively, follow these steps:

Identify the place value to which you want to round (e.g., nearest whole number, tenth, hundredth).
Look at the digit immediately to the right of that place value.
If that digit is 5 or greater, round up. If it’s less than 5, round down.

Example: Rounding 4.67 to the nearest whole number

Step 1: Look at the tenths place (6).
Step 2: Since 6 is greater than 5, round up.
Result: 5

In addition, when rounding to a decimal place, the same rules apply, but you will look at the digit in the position immediately following your target decimal place.
